Fines in Europe: what to consider when traveling by car

Driving in Europe allows you to choose your own route and stop times. To make your trip go smoothly, study the road requirements of the countries you will pass through in advance. Even within the EU, there are different speed limits, alcohol levels, requirements for winter tires, and mandatory car equipment. You can check the rules by country on the official Your Europe portal.
If you are planning to rent a car in Prague, let us know the route before booking. Agree on the countries of travel, the rental period and the place where to return the car.

How to prepare for the road
Before leaving, make a short list of what you need to check for each section of the route:
- Speed limits in the city, outside the city, and on highways.
- Toll road payment procedure and vignette requirements.
- Parking rules near the hotel and attractions.
- Restrictions on entry to the city center and ecological zones.
- Requirements for documents, equipment and seasonal tires.

Can the fine come after returning home?
Yes. EU countries share information about road safety violations, so a notification of a fine may come after the end of the trip. Crossing the border does not mean that the violation will remain without consequences. Read more about this on the European Union portal.
When renting a car, keep the contract and the pick-up and drop-off dates to check if the notice applies to your period of use.

What to do if you receive a fine for a rented car
Read the document carefully: check the license plate number of the car, the date, time and place of the alleged violation. Find information about the sender, the deadline for replying, payment methods and how to appeal.
If the notification was submitted by the rental company, request a copy of the original document. In case of unclear charges, clarify which amount relates to the fine itself, and which to a separate service under the contract. Before paying, check the details through the official website of the specified department.
If the data does not match your trip, prepare supporting documents and clarify the procedure for contacting the sender of the notification.
Plan your route and return in advance
The trip does not have to end at the starting point. You can agree in advance on a car rental with a return in another city so that the route corresponds to your plans. The place of pickup, the place of return and the cost of the service are specified when booking.
